'Son of Batman' animated movie to feature Bruce Wayne's love child

2014 will certainly be an exceptional year for fans of DC Comics’ Caped Crusading superhero Batman, as not only will the character be celebrating his 75th Anniversary, but there’s a ton of new material that promotes his legacy as well. One happens to be an animated film that centers on a pivotal storyline in the character’s history, which introduces Bruce Wayne to the son never knew he had: Damian Wayne.

Coming this early 2014, “Son of Batman” is the next animated feature in the DC Universe Animated Original Movie series, and is an adaptation of the storyline of the same name written by Grant Morrison and illustrated by Andy Kubert.

After finding out that he had a child with his on and off love interest Talia Al Ghul, Batman takes young Damian under his care to protect him from the man who killed his grandfather Ra’s Al Ghul and is seemingly targeting him and his mother – Slade Wilson, aka Deathstroke The Terminator.
Unfortunately, Damian’s strict and lethal upbringing under the League of Assassins has molded him into a fierce warrior, willing to fight crime but without the moral code of never taking a life his father practices. After stealing a Robin costume to prove his worth, can Batman find Damian and prevent him from taking a life or meeting his end?

Arguably one of the most controversial characters during his debut into the Batman mythos, Damian Wayne quickly became a fan favorite and mainstay after his introduction, thanks in part to Grant Morrison’s passing of the mantle of Robin into the young prodigy’s hands after Batman seemingly “died” and fell during the events of “Batman R.I.P” in 2008.

The Scottish writer soon paired the genetic offspring of Bruce Wayne with his first prodigal son Dick Grayson, who retired his Nightwing persona to become the new Batman and continue his mentor’s mission while keeping his “brother” in line.

The change in chemistry between the “Dynamic Duo” and having a temperamental Robin contributed to Damian’s fame, and even after the original Batman’s return and establishment of Batman Incorporated, the young Robin continued to fight by his father’s side, effectively adopting his ethics and strict moral code practice “never to kill“ in the process as well.

Unfortunately, recent events in the comic universe have left fans of Damian mourning for his loss, as the “Son of Batman” fell in battle to rescue his father from his vengeful mother Talia during Grant Morrison’s final run in “Batman Inc.” for DC Comics New 52 universe.

While several allusions have been made suggesting he may return, no clues to a resurrection following Morrison’s departure from the Batman universe have surfaced as of yet.

Co-creator Andy Kubert however is currently writing and drawing a separate tale, where a grown up Damian has since resurrected and taken over his father’s mission as the new Batman. Whether that will be incorporated to modern DC Continuity remains to be seen.
